It's a truly wonderful Kiwi road transport story and a lesson in so much – understanding your business and the market in which you operate, never over reaching, business as part of the community, and loving what you do. In 1975 Merv Pryce and his mate Malcolm Savage purchased the business of Maurice Vickers Transport in Stratford. It marked the beginning of a five decade adventure that hasn't quite ended yet. We sat down and chatted with Merv and former employee, contractor, and good mate Graeme Forbes. It was an absolute treat on a lovely afternoon in the shadow of Mt Taranaki. Burn all your textbooks, this is a tale of business done well by a true practitioner.
In 2015, Dave Carr organised the inaugural Magpie's Truck Run in the South Island. Tragically, this well respected good bloke passed away shortly after. His good mates, Dave Ching and Cam Lill took up the banner and kept the event going, renaming it the Dave Carr Memorial Truck Run. Built on a spirit of camaraderie, good company, and a love of the industry, this year will see it's ninth running, and it's now a major event on the national trucking event calendar.
You could be with him at the Rover's Return having a beer ... It's always a hell of a laugh catching up with our good mate and Commercial Motor magazine editor Will Shiers to see what's going on in Blighty and the Euro zone.
Our new Euro regular is Swedish log truck driver Mattias Vikberg. Our first podcast chat will introduce Mattias to us all. He's been a reader of New Zealand Trucking magazine since 2018 and listens to the podcasts. Why not make him part of the crew?!
